Abuse of Power or Double Standard

Do you consider it an abuse of power or a double standard when those in power continue to get away with the crimes they commit? World wide those in power get away with tax evasion, sexual misconduct, sexual immorality, bribery, just to name a few.

The most recent allegations are against the 74 year old Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berusconi. It is alleged that he paid to have sex with a 17 dancer and also used his influence to have her released from jail when she was being held on charges of theft.

The 74-year-old Italian PM, currently serving his third term in office, also faces charges of bribing British lawyer David Mills to secure favorable testimony in legal cases. His trial, suspended last spring after he was granted temporary immunity, resumes next month. Mills denied receiving bribes and his conviction in the case was overturned last year.

He has survived a series of political, corruption and sex scandals over the years, involving allegations of embezzlement, tax fraud and bribery.

Berlusconi has been tried on at least 17 charges since he was first elected prime minister in 1994, but none of the cases have resulted in lasting convictions; several were overturned on appeal.
He has always denied any wrongdoing, and had previously claimed immunity from prosecution, though a 2008 law granting him this was overturned the following year.

Should a person in such a high office continually be allowed to serve in office and disregard the laws that he has taken a sworn oath to uphold? In your opinion is this an abuse of power or double standard?

Why is it that many of our stars feel that they are above the law and have a sense of entitlement? We go from OJ Simpson to the latest fall from grace Lawrence Taylor?

It has been reported that Retired NFL Hall of Famer, Lawrence Taylor, was in the midst of a scandal mid-last year when he was arrested and accused of the rape of a minor. But not until January 13, 2011 did the former star linebacker finally face the music.

As a part of a plea deal, Taylor reportedly pled guilty to two misdemeanor charges in court Thursday (January 13) in New York, stemming from a May 2010 arrest for felony statutory rape.

He is expected to be sentenced to six years of probation, and must register as a sex offender. He's also been ordered to pay $1,300 in fees.

Taylor pleaded guilty to one count of soliciting a prostitute and a second count of sexual misconduct in having sex with a woman without consent, in his Thursday court appearance.

Since the victim in the case was 16, by law, she was not old enough to give consent.

Why would a person risk losing his legacy for a few minutes of pleasure? Now instead of being honored for being one of the greatest linebackers to every play, he will be remembered as a rapist. Instead of getting endorsements, he will be blackballed due to the crimes he as committed. Instead of admired when he walks into a room, he will be the object of scorn and bad jokes.

Why would one risk going from the Hall of Fame to the Hall of Shame?

The Right to Serve Your Country

I have often wondered what a person’s ethnicity or sexual preference had to do with their right to serve their country. Is an expert marksman less of a marksman because he is gay? Is an expert in hand to hand battle less of an expert, because he is gay? Is an expert medical technician less of an expert medical technician, because of their sexual preference?

President Obama signed the landmark repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, handing a major victory to advocates of gay rights and fulfilling a campaign promise to do away with a practice that he has called discriminatory.

Casting the repeal in terms of past civil rights struggles, Obama said he was proud to sign a law that "will strengthen our national security and uphold the ideals that our fighting men and women risk their lives to defend."

In remarks before signing the repeal, he added: "No longer will our country be denied the service of thousands of patriotic Americans who are forced to leave the military - regardless of their skills, no matter their bravery or their zeal, no matter their years of exemplary performance - because they happen to be gay. No longer will tens of thousands of Americans in uniform be asked to live a lie, or look over their shoulder in order to serve the country that they love."

Obama quoted Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as saying, "Our people sacrifice a lot for their country, including their lives. None of them should have to sacrifice their integrity as well." Obama continued: "That's why I believe this is the right thing to do for our military. That's why I believe it is the right thing to do, period."

He said, "We are not a nation that says 'don't ask, don't tell.' We are a nation that says, 'Out of many, we are one.' "

Are we a country that selectively discriminates or do we believe that discrimination against one is discrimination against all? Should the right to serve in the military be an issue of gay rights or should it be an issue of human rights?

Should Michael Vick Be Allowed To Own A Dog?

Should a person who was convicted and served time in prison for dog fighting, killing and torturing dogs be allowed to own a dog? Do you believe that a person can change or be rehabilitated from their prior actions or lifestyle?

"I would love to get another dog in the future. I think it would be a big step for me in the rehabilitation process," Vick said, according to NBC News and TheGrio.com.

"I have been around him a lot, and feel confident that he would do a good job as a pet owner," Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday.

As part of Vick's probation, he can't buy, sell or own a dog. And some of his critics believe that arrangement should be permanent.

"Just as convicted pedophiles aren't allowed free access to children, anyone who is responsible for hanging, electrocuting, or shooting dogs and who causes them to suffer in other unimaginable ways should never again be allowed access to dogs," said Lisa Lange, vice president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "All things considered, it is a very small price to pay, especially compared to the suffering endured by the dogs that were abused and killed in the Bad Newz Kennels."

Treason, Sexual Assault or Nothing?

Now that Julian Assange the founder of WikiLeaks has been arrested; in your opinion, what do you believe he should be tried for. Do you believe he should be tried for the allegations of rape? Do you believe he should be tried for the allegations of treason? Or do believe they should not try him on any charges?

The law Mr. Assange continues to violate is the Espionage Act of 1917. That law makes it a felony for an unauthorized person to possess or transmit "information relating to the national defense which information the possessor has reason to believe could be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of any foreign nation". He is accused by the Swedish authorities of one count of unlawful coercion, two counts of sexual molestation and one count of rape. He denies the charges.

Dianne Feinstein, the Democratic chair of the US Senate's intelligence committee, said Assange "should be vigorously prosecuted for espionage".

Writing in the Wall Street Journal, she says:

The Espionage Act also makes it a felony to fail to return such materials to the US government. Importantly, the courts have held that "information relating to the national defense" applies to both classified and unclassified material. Each violation is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Some people don’t believe that he should in either case. They believe that the information obtained from the government should be made available to the public and the two Swedish women who accuse WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange of sexual misconduct were at first not seeking to bring charges against him. They just wanted to track him down and persuade him to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases, according to several people in contact with his entourage at the time.

Should Athletes Be Penalized For Honoring God?

Should athletes of any age be penalized for honoring God? What message is being sent to our young people and adults when High School students are being penalized for pointing to the sky in honor of God after scoring a touchdown? Prayer has been removed from the schools, now it appears as though a young person can’t even acknowledge their belief in God.

Are Hail Marys banned, too? A High School football player in Tacoma, Wash., got flagged for dropping to his knee and pointing to the sky after scoring a touchdown during a playoff game.

"It's just something I do every time I get in the end zone,” said Ronnie Hastie, a Tumwater High School running back. “To honor my Lord because I play for him. I give him the glory because he's the one that gives me the strength."

Although Hastie’s strength may be divine, high school referees are apparently not.

He was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, a 15 yard penalty—the same amount of yards a lineman would receive after steamrolling a quarterback well after a play.

He apparently broke a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association rule that bans players from drawing attention to themselves.

“I thought it was pretty crummy that kids can't give thanks in public," one Tumwater fan told Q13 FOX.

What is next, will High School students be penalized for wearing crosses or other religious apparel? Will they be penalized for even speaking about God or acknowledging their beliefs? Where does it end? When does it start to invade our constitutional rights to freedom of speech and freedom of expression?

WikiLeaks: Does the Public Need to Know Everything?

The big question in this matter is how much does the public really need to know? Do we need to hear every conversation that our politicians have, especially when they believe that their conversation is a private one? Do we need to know all of the details on how our country is being defended or do we just want to know that we are being defended?

If the governments private matters are being published, are ours as private citizens next?

Secret U.S. diplomatic cables published by the WikiLeaks website reveal that most of the 200 U.S. tactical nuclear weapons based in Europe are located in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Turkey.

The countries have long been suspected of housing the warheads, but the leaked cables appear to be confirmation of that information.

A NATO spokeswoman told VOA Tuesday the leaking of any classified information, diplomatic or military, was "illegal, irresponsible and dangerous".

Another question is does linking such classified information place the country or an individual at a higher safety risk than the information remaining classified? Do you want your enemies to know what you are thinking or doing?

What does this say about the security of our national security systems? One person comments, The real problem governments are having with Wikileaks has nothing to do with national security. If Wikileaks can access the information, then for certain almost ALL governments can do the same. What is upsetting them is that citizens of all countries are getting a glimpse at the thoughts of the ruling elite.

Security Or Invasion Of Privacy

The question being raised regarding the new full body scanners in the New York Airports is; are these security measures or is this invasion of privacy? Are TSA agents able to randomly pick who they want to scan without any just cause?

The Advanced Imaging Technology scanners, allow airport screeners to see beneath a traveler’s clothes. Critics of the screening have already called for a National Opt-Out day on Nov. 24, traditionally the busiest travel day of the year, to protest the scans, and privacy groups like the Electronic Privacy Information Center are seeking a federal court order to halt the use of the scanners.

The imagery from the devices are viewed by screeners in an isolated room, away from the checkpoint, but privacy concerns are mounting as more Americans encounter the scanners. Travelers are allowed to opt out of the electronic strip search, but under new TSA policies they must then accept an aggressive pat-down instead.

“It violates the privacy of everyone, including small children who go through these scans,” said Greenfield. “Which is really outrageous when you think about that.”

Do you believe that this is just a necessary inconvenience to provide an improved measure of public safety, or do you believe that they have gone too far and the public’s privacy is being invaded? Is this something that should be legislated or does the city council have more important matters to be concerned with? Who Controls Your Money?

When we look at the Keith Olbermann suspension, it seems to raise a larger issue, the issue of who controls the spending of one’s money? Should the company that you work for tell you or legislate who you make legal contributions to? Are companies or news organizations so short sighted that they do not believe that a news anchor can separate their personal beliefs from their professional integrity.

The NBC News policy is as follows, "Anyone working for NBC News who takes part in civic or other outside activities may find that these activities jeopardize his or her standing as an impartial journalist because they may create the appearance of a conflict of interest. Such activities may include participation in or contributions to political campaigns or groups that espouse controversial positions. You should report any such potential conflicts in advance to, and obtain prior approval of, the president of NBC News or his designee.”

Voices from both the left and the right have questioned the decision. Bill Kristol, the editor of the Weekly Standard, came out with a blog post titled “Keep Keith!” that argued: “He’s not a reporter. It’s an opinion show. If Olbermann wants to put his money where his mouth is, more power to him.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) also criticized MSNBC. “At a time when the ownership of Fox news contributed millions of dollars to the Republican Party, when a number of Fox commentators are using the network as a launching pad for their presidential campaigns and are raising money right off the air, it is absolutely unacceptable that MSNBC suspended one of the most popular progressive commentators in the country. “

The question is who controls your money? Do the companies that we work for control who we contribute to or should that be a personal matter? Can we sign away our rights to make legal contributions to a legitimate political party?

Should someone be fired from their show, for stating their personal opinion on another station’s show? Juan Williams, Senior Analyst for NPR News was terminated for statements that he made on The O’Reilly Factor, hosted by Bill O’Reilly. Mr. Williams’ statement was as follows:

"O'Reilly has been looking for support for his own remarks on a recent episode of ABC's The View in which he directly blamed Muslims for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Co-hosts Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg walked off the set in the middle of his appearance.

"Williams responded: 'Look, Bill, I'm not a bigot. You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on a plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.'

"Williams also warned O'Reilly against blaming all Muslims for 'extremists,' saying Christians shouldn't be blamed for Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh."

On the basis of the above statement Juan Williams was relieved of his duties as Senior Analyst for NPR News. Here's the statement NPR from CEO Vivian Schiller and Senior Vice President for News Ellen Weiss released just after midnight:

"Tonight we gave Juan Williams notice that we are terminating his contract as a Senior News Analyst for NPR News.

"Juan has been a valuable contributor to NPR and public radio for many years and we did not make this decision lightly or without regret. However, his remarks on The O’Reilly Factor this past Monday were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a News Analyst with NPR.

"We regret these circumstances and thank Juan Williams for his many years of service to NPR and public radio."

Is NPR News actions a form of censorship? Do we still have the right of freedom of speech? Mr. Williams was not working on their program at the time and was not stating the opinion of their station; he was giving his personal opinion of what goes through his mind in a particular situation.

Apologize For What?

One of the things that we must be weary of is not standing up for the truth. Approximately nineteen years ago Anita Hill testified before Congress with reference to her relationship with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

She stated that Justice Thomas had sexually inappropriate behavior towards her while she was working for him. She has never recanted any of her statements.

Recently Justice Thomas’ wife contacted Professor Hill requesting that she issue an apology. The voice mail transcript is as follows:

"I just wanted to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something. I would love you to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband. So give it some thought and certainly pray about this and come to understand why you did what you did. OK, have a good day," said Thomas in the message (AP).

The question is if one is telling the truth, why should they apologize? Should one apologize when they are telling the truth? Is Justice Thomas’ wife wrong for contacting Anita Thomas after all of these years? Should this be an issue to be handled between her and Justice Thomas?

Predator or Prey

Recently there have been allegations filed against Bishop Eddie Long of sexual improprieties with teenage boys. Bishop Long has been an active proponent against same sex relationships. He has led marches against gay rights and he preaches against homosexual relationships.

The question I am raising is do you believe that Bishop Long is a predator or is he prey?

Is he a victim of his notoriety and being set up or has he preyed on these young boys using his influence and lavish gifts to illicit a sexual relationship with them? Has he used his position and his status to obtain access to victimize his accusers or are they victimizing him in an effort to obtain a financial settlement?
